Some Minecraft versions and modpacks require a specific version of Java, otherwise they won't start. Here's how to change the Java version on your Minecraft server.
Changing Java Version
- Access the GhostCap Panel and select your Minecraft server.
- Go to
File Manager. - Open the
docker_overwritefile. - The file contains your current Java version, such as
Java 8. Replace it with the version you need, using the same format. For example, changeJava 8toJava 21. - Click
Save, thenRestartyour server.
Which Java Version Do I Need?
| Minecraft Version | Java Version |
|---|---|
| 26.1 and newer | Java 25 |
| 1.20.5 to 1.21.x | Java 21 |
| 1.17 to 1.20.4 | Java 17 |
| 1.16.5 and older | Java 8 |
Tip
If a modpack lists a required Java version, use that instead. You can change the Java version at any time without affecting anything on your server.
